Jessica Alba was no young beauty who stumbled onto stardom. A serious actress with formal training, she enrolled in her first acting class at age twelve. Because of her exotic look and her innate talent, she was signed by an agent only a year later. Starting modestly, she landed a small role in the 1994 feature Camp Nowhere at age 13.

Alba appeared in national TV commercials for major brands as she continued her film work with key roles in smaller independent movies. Her first television experience came in 1994 with a recurring role in the Nickelodeon comedy series, The Secret World of Alex Mack. Using her acting ability plus her talents as an expert swimmer, she snared the role of Maya in the first two seasons of the TV series Flipper.

Throughout Alba's teenage years she continually honed her craft as an actress studying with William H. Macy and his at the Atlantic Theater Company, which was developed by Macy and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, David Mamet.

Undoubtedly, most of Alba's early fans know Jessica from her breakout role as Max Guevera, a genetically-engineered super-soldier, in the sci-fi series Dark Angel. Co-created by James Cameron, the series ran for two seasons showcasing Alba's serious acting abilities as well as her serious 'girl-next-door' beauty.

Her beauty and sex appeal, on display for an international audience in Dark Angel, has had critics and publications at the top of nearly every list. Some of these include Playboy magazine's 25 Sexiest Celebrities, AskMen.com's most desirable women and Maxim's top 100 of 2006.

Because of her popularity (and roles) that portray Alba as a sex symbol and temptress, her acting ability is frequently overlooked or disregarded. Eager to set the record straight, Jessica resents being thought of for only her shapely body and sensuality. To that end, she has resisted posing or appearing on screen in the nude and continues to seek roles that showcase the depth and range of her acting ability.

Good news for her career? Maybe. Bad news for us? Definitely.
